Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between national population density and maternal health coverage.
  • To determine if higher population density is associated with better health service utilization.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional, cross-country Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions were performed.
  • Two measures of population density were used: urban population percentage and a calculated density score.
  • Three maternal health coverage indicators were analyzed: antenatal care visits, skilled birth attendants, and in-facility delivery.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant positive relationship was found between population density measures and maternal health coverage.
  • An increase in the density score was associated with a 0.2% rise in coverage rates, on average.
  • Both urban population percentage and the density score showed positive correlations with improved maternal health service utilization.

Conclusions:

  • Countries with dispersed populations face greater challenges in achieving national and international health coverage targets.
  • Population density is a significant factor influencing the feasibility and success of health service delivery.
  • Findings support the hypothesis that higher population density facilitates better health service coverage.
