Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Avoidant01:26

Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Avoidant

Narcissistic and avoidant personality traits represent two contrasting patterns of behavior that significantly influence social interactions and self-perception. While individuals with narcissistic disorder seek admiration and validation, individuals with avoidant personality disorder withdraw due to fear of judgment.
Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Narcissistic individuals exhibit an inflated sense of self-importance and an excessive need for admiration. They are often...
Hazan and Shaver's Attachment Styles01:28

Hazan and Shaver's Attachment Styles

Attachment theory, developed initially to explain infant–caregiver bonds, has been extended to illuminate patterns of intimacy in adult romantic relationships. Psychologists Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver proposed that the attachment styles observed in infancy form a framework for how individuals approach emotional closeness and conflict in adulthood. These attachment styles—secure, avoidant, and anxious—are linked to enduring patterns of behavior and emotional regulation in adult relationships.
Social Anxiety Disorder01:28

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is characterized by an intense fear of social situations where one might face humiliation, rejection, embarrassment, or negative evaluation. This disorder leads individuals to avoid activities like casual conversations, public speaking, or seemingly simple tasks such as eating, signing documents, or swimming, in public settings. Its impact extends beyond discomfort, often significantly interfering with daily functioning and quality of life.
Avoidance Learning and Learned Helplessness01:14

Avoidance Learning and Learned Helplessness

Avoidance learning and learned helplessness are critical concepts in understanding behavioral responses to negative stimuli.
Avoidance learning occurs when an organism learns that a specific behavior can prevent an unpleasant outcome. For example, a student who receives a bad grade may start studying harder to avoid future poor grades. This behavior persists even when the negative outcome is no longer present. Avoidance learning is powerful because it maintains behavior in the absence of the...
Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood03:34

Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood

Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder01:30

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry that persists for at least six months, significantly interfering with daily functioning. Unlike situational anxiety, which arises in response to specific stressors, GAD often occurs without a clear cause. Individuals may experience disproportionate worry about work, health, or relationships. For instance, a person might continuously fear poor health despite normal medical evaluations or...

Summary

High trait anxiety (HTA) is linked to impaired safety learning, not threat learning. HTA individuals struggle to unlearn fear, potentially worsening anxiety disorders.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychophysiology

Background:

  • Trait anxiety is a risk factor for anxiety disorders.
  • Previous research on fear learning in high trait anxiety (HTA) is inconclusive, possibly due to methodological limitations.
  • Understanding fear and safety learning mechanisms is crucial for anxiety disorder etiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether trait anxiety is associated with deficient safety learning.
  • To examine fear learning across multiple response domains and test phases.
  • To compare fear and safety learning in HTA individuals and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A two-day discriminative fear-conditioning paradigm was employed.
  • Participants included 20 HTA individuals and 22 healthy Controls.
  • Fear learning was assessed using startle responses, distress ratings, skin conductance, and unconditioned stimulus (UCS) expectancy.

Main Results:

  • HTA participants exhibited stronger fear responses (startle, distress) to safety cues (CS(-)) compared to controls.
  • Fear responses to threat cues (CS(+)) did not differ significantly between groups.
  • Impaired extinction and re-extinction of fear responses were observed in HTA individuals.

Conclusions:

  • High trait anxiety may be characterized by deficits in safety learning.
  • Impaired safety learning could contribute to the persistence and generalization of fear in anxiety disorders.
  • Future research should explore interventions targeting safety learning in HTA individuals.
