Human rickettsioses in the Batna area, eastern Algeria

Rickettsial infections, including Mediterranean spotted fever and typhus, are common causes of fever with rash in eastern Algeria. This study identified at least five types of rickettsioses, highlighting their significance in the region.

- Flea-borne spotted fever (Rickettsia felis) and R. aeschlimannii infection were each identified in 2 patients (1.9%).
- Murine typhus (Rickettsia typhi) and epidemic typhus (Rickettsia prowazekii) were diagnosed in 4 (3.7%) and 1 (0.9%) patients, respectively. R. felis and R. aeschlimannii infections were reported for the first time in Algeria.
Conclusions:
- At least five distinct rickettsioses co-exist in eastern Algeria.
- Rickettsioses account for 13% of febrile exanthema cases in the region.
- Typhus group rickettsioses, including epidemic typhus, show a high incidence and warrant attention.
