Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Arterial Anatomy
  • Hemodynamics

Background:

  • The profunda femoris artery is crucial for lower limb circulation due to its extensive anastomotic network.
  • It serves as a vital link between the iliac and superficial femoral/popliteal arterial systems.
  • Isolated insufficiency of the profunda femoris artery is typically uncommon.

Observation:

  • A unique case presented where the native common femoral artery and its bifurcation were excluded by bypass grafts.
  • This exclusion led to a situation mimicking isolated profunda femoris artery insufficiency.
  • The patient's condition was directly linked to the surgical exclusion of the native arterial inflow.

Findings:

  • The study details a rare instance of profunda femoris artery compromise secondary to bypass grafting.
  • Surgical intervention focused on revascularizing the profunda femoris artery.
  • Successful revascularization of the profunda femoris artery led to symptom amelioration.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of preserving profunda femoris artery inflow during bypass procedures.
  • It underscores the potential for iatrogenic profunda femoris artery insufficiency.
  • Revascularization strategies for the profunda femoris artery can be effective in managing such complications.
