Background:

  • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a common procedure for urinary retention caused by prostatic obstruction.
  • While short-term TURP success is known, long-term outcomes, especially concerning age, are less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term impact of age on outcomes after TURP.
  • To assess catheter-free rates, incontinence, pad usage, and quality of life in patients following TURP.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of 100 consecutive patients undergoing TURP for urinary retention.
  • Follow-up for 3 years to collect data on catheter dependence, incontinence, pad usage, and quality of life via the International Prostate Symptom Score.

Main Results:

  • Ninety-five patients were analyzed with a mean age of 75.6 years and 704-day follow-up.
  • 13% of patients remained catheter-dependent, with a significantly higher mean age (84.9 years) compared to catheter-free patients (74.3 years).
  • 24% of patients aged 80+ were catheter-dependent; 31% reported urine leakage, but only 5% required pads.

Conclusions:

  • TURP provides satisfactory outcomes for urinary retention, even in the elderly if anesthesia is safe.
  • Advanced age is a significant factor associated with higher long-term catheter dependence post-TURP.
  • Most reported urine leakage is clinically insignificant, and overall quality of life is good.
