Summary

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) shows a small but significant benefit for lower extremity function in chronic stroke patients. Further research is needed to clarify its long-term therapeutic value and superiority over other gait training methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the effectiveness of functional electrical stimulation (FES) for improving lower extremity function in chronic stroke survivors.
  • To analyze the impact of FES on the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) distance.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) sourced from major databases (PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Scopus).
  • Inclusion criteria: chronic stroke (≥6 months post-stroke), FES/NMES intervention, comparison group, and lower extremity outcome assessment.
  • Methodological quality assessed using PEDro scale; pooled analysis of 6MWT data using a fixed effects model.

Main Results:

  • Seven RCTs with 231 participants met the inclusion criteria.
  • Pooled analysis demonstrated a small but statistically significant positive treatment effect of FES on 6MWT distance (SMD = 0.379, P = .013).
