Abstract:
We report the case of a 66-year-old male patient who presented acute and sub-acute subdural hematomas complicating a grade I meningioma. In the absence of trauma, detection of a subdural hematoma necessitates an etiologic research, in particular the exclusion of a vascular anomaly or a tumour. Subdural bleeding as a complication of a non malignant meningioma is a very rare and threatening situation and requires prompt surgical removal of the tumor.
Insights
A rare case of subdural hematomas complicating a non-malignant meningioma highlights the need for thorough investigation. Prompt surgical removal is crucial for this threatening complication.
Area of Science:
- Neurosurgery
- Neuropathology
Background:
- Subdural hematomas (SDH) typically result from trauma.
- In non-traumatic cases, etiological research is essential to rule out underlying causes like vascular anomalies or tumors.
Observation:
- A 66-year-old male presented with acute and sub-acute subdural hematomas.
- The subdural bleeding was found to be a complication of a grade I meningioma.
Findings:
- Meningiomas, even benign ones, can rarely present with significant complications such as subdural hematomas.
- This case underscores the diagnostic challenge in non-traumatic SDH when a tumor is the underlying cause.
Implications:
- This emphasizes the importance of considering intracranial tumors in the differential diagnosis of non-traumatic subdural hematomas.
- Prompt surgical intervention for both the meningioma and the hematoma is critical for patient outcomes.
