Whipple disease can mimic inflammatory arthritis and delay diagnosis, especially when anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapies fail. Suspect Whipple disease in patients with inflammatory rheumatism and elevated acute-phase reactants despite anti-TNF treatment.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Rheumatology
- Immunology
Background:
- Whipple disease is a rare infection with diverse symptoms, often mistaken for chronic inflammatory rheumatic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or spondylarthritis.
- Delayed diagnosis of Whipple disease can occur due to its mimicry of rheumatic diseases, potentially leading to prolonged immunosuppressive therapy.
