Summary

Laparoscopic kidney transplantation offers recipients faster recovery than open procedures. This case study details a successful laparoscopic en bloc kidney transplant in an obese diabetic patient receiving kidneys from a non-heart beating donor.

Background:

Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy is a standard procedure with benefits like reduced pain and faster recovery.
Extending laparoscopic techniques to kidney recipients is an emerging area in transplantation.
Previous work involved laparoscopic kidney transplants from deceased donors.

Purpose of the Study:

To present a case of laparoscopic en bloc kidney transplantation.
To demonstrate the feasibility of this technique in complex recipients.
To extend laparoscopic transplantation to organs from non-heart beating donors.

Main Methods:

A laparoscopic en bloc kidney transplantation was performed.
The recipient was an obese diabetic patient.
The donor kidneys were from a 70-year-old non-heart beating donor.

Main Results:

The procedure was successfully completed laparoscopically.
The patient received kidneys from a non-heart beating donor via laparoscopic en bloc technique.
This represents a further extension of laparoscopic transplantation.
