Summary

Ischemic postconditioning (IPC) shows promise in protecting the heart during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This meta-analysis found improved cardiac markers and reduced heart failure in patients receiving IPC.

Background:

  • Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a standard treatment for acute myocardial infarction.
  • Ischemic postconditioning (IPC) is a potential strategy to limit myocardial damage during reperfusion therapy.
  • Evidence linking IPC to cardioprotection in primary PCI patients requires synthesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and meta-analyze the current evidence on the efficacy of IPC in patients undergoing primary PCI.
  • To assess the impact of IPC on myocardial injury markers, infarct size, and clinical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Searched major databases (PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane) for relevant studies from January 1998 to May 2011.
  • Included studies comparing IPC with standard care in primary PCI patients.
  • Conducted a meta-analysis using Review Manager 5.0.

Main Results:

  • Thirteen studies were included in the meta-analysis.
  • IPC significantly reduced peak creatine kinase and creatine kinase-myocardial band levels.
