Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Background:

  • Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a type of soft tissue sarcoma.
  • Renal parenchymal or capsular origin of UPS is exceptionally rare, with few reported cases.
  • This study addresses a unique presentation of UPS within the kidney.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a rare case of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma originating in the renal parenchyma.
  • To contribute to the limited literature on renal UPS.
  • To highlight diagnostic and management considerations for this rare entity.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 70-year-old patient presenting with ureterohydronephrosis and pyelonephritis.
  • Diagnostic workup including ureteral catheterization and renal scintigraphy.
  • Nephroureterectomy followed by histopathological examination confirming pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma.

Main Results:

  • Histopathological analysis confirmed undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the kidney.
  • The patient received chemotherapy, but treatment was discontinued by the family.
  • The patient survived for 10 months post-diagnosis.
