Summary

This study on the Stroop Color-Word Test found Stroop interference is highest in children, decreasing in adulthood, and rising in older adults. Reverse-Stroop interference shows the opposite pattern, suggesting distinct cognitive processes.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Developmental Psychology

Context:

  • The Stroop Color-Word Test is a widely used measure of cognitive interference.
  • Understanding the developmental trajectory of cognitive functions like interference is crucial.
  • Previous research primarily used verbal response methods to assess Stroop effects.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the life-span development of both Stroop and reverse-Stroop interference.
  • To analyze age-related changes in cognitive interference using a novel group-administered test.
  • To determine if Stroop and reverse-Stroop interference follow similar developmental patterns.

Summary:

  • A group Stroop Color-Word Test was administered to 1,945 participants aged 7-86 years.
  • Stroop interference peaked in childhood, decreased through adulthood, and increased in older adults.

  • Reverse-Stroop interference was lowest in children, increased into adulthood, and remained stable thereafter.
  • Impact:

    • The findings suggest that Stroop and reverse-Stroop interference are underpinned by different cognitive processes.
    • This study provides normative data for Stroop and reverse-Stroop interference across the human life span.
    • The results contribute to a deeper understanding of cognitive development and aging.
