Novel 3-D image-matching software accurately assesses implant positioning after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This tool shows excellent correlation between intraoperative and postoperative measurements, proving useful for TKA evaluation.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Traditional 2-D radiographic assessments for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may lack precision for 3-D implant positioning.
  • Accurate postoperative evaluation is crucial for assessing TKA outcomes and implant alignment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of novel 3-D image-matching software for assessing implant positioning after TKA.
  • To determine if this 3-D software is a reliable tool for postoperative TKA evaluation.

Main Methods:

  • 30 patients undergoing TKA were included.
  • Intraoperative bone cut thickness was measured.
  • Postoperative measurements were performed using Athena Knee 3-D image-matching software, comparing intra- and postoperative bone cut thicknesses.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were found in the medial compartment bone cuts.
  • A mean difference of approximately 1 mm was observed in the lateral compartment, potentially due to remaining cartilage.
  • Excellent correlation (linear regression) was found between intraoperative and postoperative measurements for all bone cuts.

Conclusions:

  • The 3-D image-matching software demonstrates sufficient accuracy for assessing postoperative implant positioning in TKA.
  • This software, initially for preoperative planning, is a valuable tool for postoperative TKA evaluation.
