Summary

Low birth weight is a significant risk factor for cryptorchidism in newborn males. This study identified low birth weight as the primary predictor of this common genital malformation in Egyptian neonates.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Urology
  • Neonatal Health
  • Congenital Malformations

Background:

  • Cryptorchidism is a frequent genital anomaly in newborns with largely unknown causes.
  • Geographical variations in prevalence suggest environmental influences.
  • Understanding risk factors is crucial for early intervention and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of cryptorchidism in Egyptian neonates.
  • To identify potential risk factors associated with cryptorchidism in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A study population of 1000 neonates was recruited from El Galaa maternity teaching hospital.
  • A control group of 40 healthy full-term infants was selected for risk factor analysis.
  • Logistic regression was employed to identify independent predictors.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of cryptorchidism was found to be 2.9% (29 per 1000 males).
  • Low birth weight (≤ 2.75 kg) was identified as the sole independent risk factor (Odds Ratio: 10.3).
  • Other associated factors included preterm birth, cesarean delivery, steroid therapy, and twin pregnancy.

Conclusions:

  • Low birth weight is the primary risk factor for cryptorchidism in Egyptian neonates.
  • Further large-scale, multi-centric studies are recommended to fully elucidate risk factors.
  • Findings emphasize the importance of monitoring birth weight in relation to cryptorchidism risk.
