This study introduces two-dimensional (2-D) mechanical wave imaging to visualize muscle contractions. This novel technique reveals detailed tissue velocity and wave propagation, offering insights into muscle mechanics.
Area of Science:
- Biomechanics
- Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
- Tissue Mechanics
Background:
- Skeletal muscle contraction involves mechanical changes like shortening and thickening.
- Specialized ultrasound can quantify tissue velocities and mechanical wave propagation during contraction.
- Mechanical waves may offer new insights into musculoskeletal health and disorders.
Purpose of the Study:
- To demonstrate two-dimensional (2-D) mechanical wave imaging during skeletal muscle contraction.
- To analyze tissue velocity profiles and mechanical wave propagation in contracting muscle.
- To explore the potential of 2-D tissue velocity analysis for assessing muscle properties.
Main Methods:
- Utilized B-mode image acquisition with electrostimulation.
- Employed speckle-tracking and time-stamp sorting for 2-D tissue velocity imaging.
- Achieved a 1.4 kHz frame rate for imaging biceps brachii muscle contraction.
Main Results:
- Observed counter-propagating compressional and shear waves in the longitudinal direction of contracting muscle (2.8-4.4 m/s).
- Detected a compressional wave in the transverse direction of non-contracting tissue (1.2-1.9 m/s).
- Presented novel data on tissue velocity profiles and mechanical wave propagation.
Conclusions:
- Analyzing transient 2-D tissue velocity provides a simultaneous assessment of active and passive muscle properties.
- 2-D mechanical wave imaging offers a new approach to understanding muscle function.
- This technique has potential applications in diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders.
