Summary

Polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheet patches effectively managed large oral cancer resection wounds in six patients, offering good pain control. Further evaluation of tissue contraction and oral intake is planned.

Background:

  • Early-stage oral and oropharyngeal cancers frequently require surgical resection.
  • Large defects post-resection often necessitate biomaterial grafts for closure.
  • Polyglycolic acid sheets are emerging as a potential option for wound coverage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of polyglycolic acid sheet patches in managing large wounds after oral or oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma resection.
  • To assess pain control and adverse effects associated with polyglycolic acid sheet patch grafting.

Main Methods:

  • Six patients with large wounds from oral/oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma resection underwent treatment.
  • Polyglycolic acid sheet patches were applied to mucosal defects using fibrin glue.
  • Post-operative oral intake was initiated on day 4.

Main Results:

  • Four out of six patients experienced good pain control with minimal analgesic requirements.
  • Two patients had polyglycolic acid sheet patch detachment, requiring higher analgesic doses.
  • No adverse effects were attributed to the polyglycolic acid sheet patch or fibrin glue.

Conclusions:

  • Polyglycolic acid sheet patch grafting is effective for large oral cancer resection wounds, providing good pain management.
