Summary

This study explored a combination drug therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management. A significant proportion of COPD patients showed reversible lung function improvement with this novel approach, particularly younger, less-smoking individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of a critical combination therapy for managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • To assess the potential for reversibility of lung function decline in COPD patients using a multi-drug regimen.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited moderate-to-severe COPD patients (current/past smokers) unresponsive to initial therapies.
  • Administered a combination of oral prednisolone, inhaled beclomethasone, salmeterol, ipratropium bromide, N-Acetylcysteine, azithromycin, and theophylline.
  • Monitored patient response over a mean period of 6.7 months.

Main Results:

  • Out of 48 patients, 13 (27.0%) responded, showing a >=15% increase in FEV1.
  • Responders were significantly younger and had a history of less smoking compared to non-responders (P=0.05 and P=0.04).
  • No significant differences in emphysema or air trapping were observed between responders and non-responders.

Conclusions:

  • A considerable proportion of COPD patients demonstrated reversible lung function with the combination drug therapy.
  • The synergistic actions of the combined drugs offer significant benefits to COPD patients.
  • Treatment efficacy was notably higher in younger patients with lower smoking exposure.
