Tuberculous empyema necessitatis, a complication of tuberculosis, presents as a chest wall mass with a pleural collection. Computed tomography (CT) scans showing these findings suggest considering tuberculosis, especially with rising infection rates.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) infection is increasingly diagnosed in pulmonary and extrapulmonary forms.
  • Empyema necessitatis is a rare manifestation of thoracic infections where the infection extends through the chest wall.

Observation:

  • Two patients presented with anterior chest wall masses.
  • Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed associated thick-walled pleural collections in both cases.

Findings:

  • The CT findings were consistent with empyema necessitatis.
  • Tuberculous empyema necessitatis was considered a strong possibility given the imaging results.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider tuberculous empyema necessitatis in patients with chest wall masses and pleural collections on CT.
