Surveys02:16

Surveys

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

One-Way ANOVA: Unequal Sample Sizes

One-way ANOVA can be performed on three or more samples of unequal sizes. However, calculations get complicated when sample sizes are not always the same. So, while performing ANOVA with unequal samples size, the following equation is used:

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

This study investigated how different response formats in hand preference (HP) questionnaires affect participant answers. Results show handedness influences responses, but questionnaire format and content remain consistent for ordering individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Hand preference (HP) is a key indicator of neurological organization and individual differences.
  • HP questionnaires are widely used in research and clinical settings, yet their structural properties are under-researched.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the impact of varying response formats (binary vs. 5-point graded) in HP questionnaires.
  • To investigate how response tendencies and the correlation between graded and binary responses are affected by questionnaire design.

Main Methods:

  • 200 volunteers (100 left-handers, 100 right-handers) completed two versions of a composite HP questionnaire.
  • The questionnaire included items from established instruments (Annett, Edinburgh, Healy, Waterloo).
  • Response formats compared were binary and 5-point graded.

Main Results:

  • Participant handedness significantly influenced response patterns and the mapping between graded and binary responses.
  • No significant effect of participant sex on response patterns was observed.
  • High consistency in the overall ordering of participants based on HP measures was found across different questionnaire contents and response formats.

Conclusions:

  • The choice of response format in HP questionnaires can influence individual responses, particularly concerning handedness.
  • Despite format variations, HP questionnaires demonstrate reliable consistency in ranking individuals.
  • Further research into HP questionnaire properties is warranted to optimize measurement.
