Summary

Pulse oximeters showed significant differences compared to the HP ear oximeter, especially in Black subjects and at lower oxygen saturation levels. These devices may not be interchangeable for accurate SaO2 measurements in clinical research.

Background:

  • The HP ear oximeter has been a standard for noninvasive oxygen saturation (SaO2) measurement.
  • Evaluating newer pulse oximeters for clinical research comparability is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the suitability of five pulse oximeters as replacements for the HP ear oximeter.
  • To determine the accuracy and agreement of pulse oximeters with the HP ear oximeter across different demographics and saturation levels.

Main Methods:

  • Isocapnic progressive hypoxia trials were conducted on 22 white and 6 black subjects.
  • Five pulse oximeters were compared against the HP ear oximeter for SaO2 measurements.
