Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Assessing cognitive functions like memory is crucial in psychological research and practice.
  • Existing memory assessment tools may lack specific psychometric properties for diverse populations.
  • Item Response Theory (IRT) offers advanced methods for test construction and analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To construct and validate a computer-based memory test battery for the Portuguese adult population.
  • To evaluate the internal structure and reliability of the memory tests.
  • To assess the psychometric properties using Item Response Theory.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a six-test computer memory battery based on Item Response Theory principles.
  • Factor analysis (N=547 undergraduate students) to examine the internal structure.

  • Confirmatory factor analysis of several models.
  • Internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and IRT analyses (Rasch, partial credit models).
  • Main Results:

    • A two-factor model (verbal and non-verbal latent variables) demonstrated the best fit, aligning with the initial battery design.
    • High internal consistency reliability was found for the six tests (alpha range: .72–.89).
    • IRT analyses indicated good Infit and Outfit statistics and precise parameter estimation.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed memory battery exhibits a robust internal structure and good reliability for Portuguese adults.
    • IRT analyses support the quality of the test parameters.
    • The battery shows potential utility for psychological research and clinical practice.
