Abstract:
A new norditerpenoid 1, as well as 15 known terpenoids 2-16, was isolated from the ethanol extract of the branches and leaves of Euonymus grandiflorus Wall. The structures of these compounds were elucidated mainly due to spectroscopic methods (1D NMR, 2D NMR, ESI-MS and HR-ESI-MS). Compound 11, betulinic acid, displayed moderate cytotoxicity against four human tumor cell lines A549, HCT116, SK-BR-3 and HepG2, with IC50 values of 10.3, 12.2, 3.6 and 4.5 μg/mL, respectively.

Aromatic ring substitutions: Substituting the aromatic ring with –OH groups at positions 3 and 4 yields catecholamines (e.g., epinephrine), which have a high affinity for adrenoceptors. Hydrogen bonding between –OH groups and receptors enhances adrenergic activity.
