Summary

Decompressive surgery for leprosy nerve damage shows no added benefit over steroid treatment alone. More high-quality trials are needed to confirm effectiveness for nerve function improvement.

  • Included two RCTs with 88 participants, both at high risk of bias.
  • Very low-quality evidence suggests no significant difference in nerve function improvement after two years between surgery plus prednisolone versus prednisolone alone.
  • Adverse effects of decompressive surgery were not adequately reported in the included studies.

Conclusions:

  • Current low-quality evidence does not support a significant added benefit of decompressive surgery over steroid treatment alone for leprosy nerve damage.
  • High-quality, well-designed RCTs are necessary to determine the true effectiveness of combined surgical and medical treatment.
  • Further research is needed to establish optimal treatment strategies for leprosy-induced nerve damage.
