Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Congenital Disorders

Background:

  • Congenital ocular lesions require accurate diagnosis to differentiate from progressive conditions.
  • Routine eye examinations are crucial for detecting asymptomatic abnormalities in children.

Observation:

  • A 7-year-old boy presented with asymptomatic yellowish alterations temporal to the fovea in his right eye.
  • These alterations exhibited irregular central hyperpigmentation and an elliptical configuration.

Findings:

  • Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) revealed a well-defined detachment of the neurosensory retina.
  • The observed clinical and imaging findings are consistent with torpedo maculopathy.

Implications:

  • Torpedo maculopathy is a rare, benign congenital condition.
  • Its typically asymptomatic and non-progressive nature suggests a favorable visual prognosis.
  • Accurate identification prevents unnecessary concern or interventions for a harmless anomaly.
