Background:

  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant global health concern.
  • The role of vitamin B12 in HCV treatment has been suggested but not widely adopted.
  • Previous research indicated vitamin B12 may inhibit HCV in vitro and correlate with treatment response.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of vitamin B12 supplementation in improving treatment outcomes for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.
  • To assess the impact of combined vitamin B12 and standard therapy on sustained viral response (SVR).

Main Methods:

  • A randomized trial was conducted involving patients with chronic HCV infection.
  • Standard therapy consisted of pegylated interferon plus ribavirin.
  • The experimental group received standard therapy combined with vitamin B12 supplementation.

Main Results:

  • The combination of vitamin B12 with pegylated interferon and ribavirin resulted in significantly better response rates at all time-points during therapy.
