Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Workplace Psychology
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Understanding factors that promote sustained work functioning is crucial for worker well-being and productivity.
  • Identifying prognostic factors aids in developing targeted interventions to improve work capacity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify prognostic factors for successful work functioning in a general working population.
  • To inform the development of interventions aimed at improving work capacity and sustainability.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study with a 3-month follow-up was conducted on 98 working individuals.
  • Work functioning was measured using the Work Role Functioning Questionnaire 2.0 (WRFQ).
  • Ordinal logistic regression analyses identified prognostic factors for successful work functioning.

Main Results:

  • Baseline work functioning and work ability were significant predictors of successful work functioning at 3-month follow-up.
  • No significant associations were found between psychological job demands or supervisor social support and successful work functioning.
  • High work ability independently predicted future successful work functioning.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first longitudinal study to identify prognostic factors for successful work functioning in the general working population.
  • High work ability is a strong, independent predictor of sustained successful work functioning.
  • Findings highlight the importance of assessing and supporting work ability for long-term work capacity.
