Analgesia and Pain Management01:25

Analgesia and Pain Management

Pain is critical to various clinical pathologies, provoking an urgent need for effective management. Pain, whether acute or chronic, is a complex neurochemical process. Its alleviation depends on the type, with nonopioid analgesics effective for mild to moderate pain, such as musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain, while neuropathic pain responds best to anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. For severe acute or chronic pain, opioids may be...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pain Management
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Neuropathic pain, arising from nerve damage, presents significant treatment challenges.
  • Facial pain following traumatic peripheral nerve injury often proves refractory to conventional analgesics.

Observation:

  • This study investigated pregabalin's efficacy in patients with post-traumatic peripheral nerve injury facial pain.
  • Participants had not responded adequately to previous analgesic treatments.

Findings:

  • Pregabalin demonstrated effectiveness in managing post-traumatic peripheral nerve injury facial pain.
  • The medication was generally well-tolerated by the study participants.

Implications:

  • Pregabalin offers a viable therapeutic option for refractory neuropathic facial pain.
  • Further research may explore optimal dosing and long-term outcomes.
