Men with hearing loss experience worse sexual health, including erectile dysfunction. This study found significant differences in sexual function scores between men with sensorineural hearing loss and those with normal hearing.
Area of Science:
- Audiology
- Urology
- Public Health
Background:
- Hearing loss is a growing public health concern.
- Sexual dysfunction is a common issue affecting men's quality of life.
- The relationship between hearing loss and sexual function remains under-explored.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of sensorineural hearing loss on male sexual function.
- To specifically assess the prevalence of erectile dysfunction in men with hearing loss.
- To compare sexual function in men with hearing loss to a control group with normal hearing.
Main Methods:
- A comparative study design was employed.
- Participants included adult men with acquired, bilateral, sensorineural hearing loss and a control group of healthy men with normal hearing.
- Sexual function was evaluated using the International Index of Erectile Functions (IIEF) questionnaire; quality of life was assessed with the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36).
Main Results:
- A statistically significant difference was observed in IIEF scores between the hearing loss group and the control group (p <0.001).
- This difference was significant across all five domains of the IIEF questionnaire and the total score.
- Men with hearing loss reported poorer sexual health outcomes compared to men with normal hearing.
Conclusions:
- Mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss is associated with diminished sexual health in men.
- Hearing impairment may be an independent risk factor for erectile dysfunction.
- Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and potential interventions.
