Summary

Developmental factors like autonomy, emotion management, and competency showed a small but significant impact on remedial course performance. These developmental measures were comparable to traditional predictors like SAT scores in explaining student success.

Area of Science:

  • Educational Psychology
  • Student Development
  • Higher Education

Background:

  • Remedial courses are crucial for students needing additional academic support.
  • Understanding factors influencing success in these courses is vital for effective interventions.
  • Traditional predictors (SAT, GPA) offer limited insight into developmental influences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between specific developmental factors and academic performance in remedial courses.
  • To assess the predictive validity of developmental inventories compared to traditional academic measures.

Main Methods:

  • Administered the Iowa Developing Autonomy Inventory, Iowa Managing Emotions Inventory, and Iowa Developing Competency Inventory.
  • Utilized regression analyses to examine the influence of developmental factors on performance.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Compared the variance accounted for by developmental measures with traditional metrics (SAT, GPA).
  • Main Results:

    • Developmental measures explained a small but significant portion of the variance in remedial course performance (2%-7%).
    • The predictive power of developmental inventories was similar to that of traditional measures (SAT scores, high-school GPA), which explained 2%-10% of the variance.
    • No single developmental factor emerged as a dominant predictor.

    Conclusions:

    • While developmental factors have a modest impact, they offer a complementary perspective to traditional predictors of student success in remedial settings.
    • Further research could explore the interplay between developmental factors and pedagogical approaches in developmental education.
    • These findings suggest that interventions targeting student development may contribute to improved outcomes in remedial programs.
