Summary

Neurotensin infusions significantly increase ileostomy output in patients. However, normal postprandial neurotensin levels do not appear to affect ileal fluid volume, suggesting a limited physiological role.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if physiological postprandial neurotensin concentrations affect ileal fluid volume.
  • To determine the dose-dependent effect of neurotensin on ileostomy output.

  • Measuring basal and postprandial plasma neurotensin levels in healthy subjects and ileostomy patients.
  • Administering neurotensin infusions at two different rates (2.3 and 6.3 pmol/kg/min) to ileostomy patients.

  • Postprandial plasma neurotensin concentrations in normal subjects ranged from 15-82 pmol/l.

Conclusions:

  • Normal postprandial plasma concentrations of neurotensin are unlikely to significantly influence the volume of fluid leaving the ileum.
  • Supraphysiological levels of neurotensin are required to elicit a substantial increase in ileal effluent volume.
