Summary

Biodentine and white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) show promising results for primary tooth pulp treatments. Both materials demonstrated suitability and biocompatibility in pulpotomy and direct pulp capping procedures in pigs.

Teeth

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...

Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Dental Histology

Background:

  • Assessing biocompatible materials for vital pulp therapy in primary teeth is crucial for maintaining tooth structure and function.
  • Traditional materials like formocresol raise concerns regarding toxicity and long-term effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the pulp response in primary pig teeth following pulpotomy and direct pulp capping with Biodentine, white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA), and formocresol (FC) or calcium hydroxide.
  • To evaluate the histological outcomes and hard tissue formation associated with these biomaterials.

Main Methods:

  • 180 primary pig teeth were treated with Biodentine, WMTA, or FC for pulpotomy, and Biodentine, WMTA, or calcium hydroxide for direct pulp capping.
  • Histological examinations were performed at 7, 28, and 90 days post-treatment.

  • Statistical analysis included Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests.
  • Main Results:

    • Pulpotomy groups showed significant differences in inflammatory response and hard tissue formation between Biodentine/WMTA and FC.
    • Direct pulp capping groups exhibited a significant difference in hard tissue formation between Biodentine and calcium hydroxide at 7 days.

    Conclusions:

    • Biodentine and WMTA are suitable and biocompatible materials for pulp capping in primary teeth.
    • These findings support the use of Biodentine and WMTA as alternatives to traditional materials in pediatric endodontics.
