Summary

Subungual exostosis (SE) is a rare benign bone tumor on the toe or finger. Misdiagnosis can lead to improper treatment, highlighting the need for accurate identification of this condition.

Background:

Subungual exostosis (SE) is a rare benign bone tumor originating from the distal phalanx.
SE can be misdiagnosed as common dermatologic conditions affecting the nail bed.
Accurate diagnosis is crucial to prevent inadequate or excessive treatments.

Observation:

A case study of a 20-year-old male with a painful lesion on the distal phalanx of the fourth toe is presented.
The lesion's characteristics mimicked other nail bed disorders.
This case underscores the diagnostic challenges associated with subungual exostosis.

Findings:

Review of clinical presentation, pathogenesis, and diagnostic methods for SE.
Histologic and radiographic findings are detailed to aid in diagnosis.
