Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively review fluoxetine exposures at two poison control centers.
  • To evaluate the clinical outcomes and potential complications of fluoxetine overdose.

Main Methods:

  • A one-year retrospective chart review of 44 fluoxetine exposures.
  • Analysis of cases treated in healthcare facilities (HCF) and those followed by phone.
  • Exclusion of cases with confounding co-ingestants.

Main Results:

  • Of 44 exposures, 31 were treated in HCF, 2 followed by phone, and 11 lost to follow-up.
  • No seizures were reported; three possible drug reactions occurred, including two with tranylcypromine.
  • Most patients with follow-up were asymptomatic or experienced mild symptoms like anxiety or confusion, especially with co-ingestants like ethanol or benzodiazepines.

Conclusions:
