This study investigated HIV Associated Dementia (HAD) incidence in India, finding a low rate of HAD stage II among HIV-positive individuals. Antiretroviral therapy significantly reduced morbidity in the HIV-infected population.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Infectious Diseases
- Public Health
Background:
- HIV infection has significant neuropathological implications.
- Understanding HIV Associated Dementia (HAD) is crucial for patient care.
- Research is ongoing to elucidate the impact of HIV on the brain.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the incidence of HIV Associated Dementia (HAD) in a suburban Indian population.
- To assess the prevalence of neurological and psychiatric symptoms in HIV-positive individuals.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment on HIV-related neurological complications.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study involving 6135 individuals undergoing pretest counseling for HIV from January 2008 to August 2010.
- HIV testing was performed using the Western blot test for consenting participants.
- Neurological and psychiatric assessments were conducted on HIV-positive individuals.
Main Results:
- Out of 6135 participants, 5688 (92.71%) were tested for HIV, with 273 (4.8%) testing positive.
- 246 (90.10%) of HIV-positive individuals were initiated on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART).
- One participant (0.37%) was diagnosed with HAD stage II, and 38 (18.92%) presented with various psychiatric symptoms.
Conclusions:
- Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) has substantially decreased HIV-related morbidity.
- The incidence of HAD appears low in this specific Indian cohort.
- Early diagnosis and treatment are vital for managing HIV and its neurological complications.
