Summary

Orthostatic tremor (OT) causes leg and trunk shaking when standing. In most cases, the cause is unknown, but some patients develop OT secondary to other neurological conditions, suggesting a link to essential tremor (ET).

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Movement Disorders

Background:

  • Orthostatic tremor (OT) is an uncommon movement disorder characterized by tremor in the legs and trunk during the standing position.
  • The etiology of OT remains largely unknown in many cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of orthostatic tremor.
  • To explore potential causes and associated conditions of OT.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical assessment of 8 patients with orthostatic tremor.
  • Electrophysiological studies were performed on the affected patients.

Main Results:

  • In 6 out of 8 patients, no specific cause for OT was identified.
  • In 2 patients, OT was secondary to hydrocephalus (from non-tumoral aqueduct stenosis) and chronic relapsing polyradiculoneuropathy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Findings suggest a potential relationship between orthostatic tremor and essential tremor.
  • Conclusions:

    • Orthostatic tremor can be idiopathic or secondary to underlying neurological diseases.
    • The study highlights a possible association between orthostatic tremor and essential tremor, warranting further investigation.
