Summary

A rare canine brain tumor, clear cell ependymoma, was diagnosed in a dog with seizures. Despite radiotherapy, the tumor persisted, highlighting challenges in treating canine central nervous system neoplasms.

Background:

Seizures in dogs can indicate serious underlying neurological conditions, including brain tumors.
Accurate diagnosis of canine brain tumors is crucial for effective treatment and prognosis.
Ependymomas are glial tumors arising from ependymal cells lining the ventricles or central canal.

Observation:

A 13-year-old dog presented with a month-long history of seizures.
MRI revealed a cystic mass in the left frontal lobe of the brain.
Stereotactic radiotherapy reduced tumor volume but did not resolve clinical signs.

Findings:

Post-mortem examination identified a gelatinous, friable mass in the left frontal lobe.
Microscopy showed neoplastic cells with eosinophilic globules.

Immunohistochemistry and ultrastructural analysis confirmed glial fibrillary acidic protein and S100 expression, consistent with ependymoma.

This case represents the first documented instance of clear cell ependymoma in a dog.

Implications:

This case expands the known spectrum of primary brain tumors in dogs.
Understanding rare tumor subtypes like clear cell ependymoma is vital for advancing veterinary neuro-oncology.
Further research is needed to develop targeted therapies for challenging canine brain tumors.
