Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Echocardiography
  • Interventional Cardiology

Background:

  • Balloon atrial septostomy is a critical intervention for neonates with specific congenital heart diseases.
  • Traditional fluoroscopy-guided procedures require patient transport and involve radiation exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of bedside balloon atrial septostomy guided by Two Dimensional Echocardiography (2DE).
  • To compare the advantages of 2DE guidance over fluoroscopy for this procedure.

Main Methods:

  • Eight pediatric patients (3-45 days old) with congenital heart defects underwent bedside balloon atrial septostomy.
  • The procedure utilized Two Dimensional Echocardiographic (2DE) visualization.
  • Patients included those with transposition of the great arteries, tricuspid atresia, and pulmonary atresia/stenosis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The procedure was performed successfully on all 8 patients without any complications.
  • 2DE provided excellent visualization of cardiac structures.
  • The procedure allowed for immediate detection of potential cardiac complications.
  • Bedside performance eliminated the need for patient transport and radiation exposure.

Conclusions:

  • Bedside balloon atrial septostomy guided by 2DE is a safe, effective, and well-tolerated procedure.
  • 2DE guidance offers significant advantages over fluoroscopy, including enhanced safety and convenience.
  • This technique is recommended as the method of choice for balloon atrial septostomy in the pediatric intensive care unit.
