Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is elevated in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, found in both inflamed and non-inflamed colon tissue. High IL-8 levels in normal-appearing mucosa may predict future UC flare-ups.

- IL-8 is expressed in normal colonic mucosa and elevated in UC patients, originating from both enterocytes and inflammatory cells.
- Gut lavage fluid analysis is a viable method for studying IL-8 in UC.
- Elevated IL-8 in macroscopically normal UC mucosa may indicate increased risk for future inflammation.
