Sample Preparation for Analysis: Advanced Techniques01:08

Sample Preparation for Analysis: Advanced Techniques

Accurate analysis of complex samples often requires advanced preparation techniques to achieve reliable and reproducible results. Samples containing inorganic or organic materials can be challenging to dissolve or decompose effectively. Standard sample preparation methods include acid digestion, fusion, dry ashing, and wet digestion.
Acid digestion with strong acids is commonly used to dissolve inorganic materials that are insoluble (do not dissolve) in water. This method can be useful for...

Blind Procedures

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which child was...

Bioequivalence studies: Biowaivers

In certain scenarios, in vitro dissolution tests can replace in vivo bioequivalence studies. This is particularly true when a drug product, though available in varying strengths, maintains proportional similarity in its active and inactive ingredients. In such cases, the need for in vivo bioequivalence studies for lower strength variants may be waived, provided dissolution tests and in vivo studies on the highest strength yield satisfactory results.Bioequivalence can be indicated through...
The Scientific Method01:32

The Scientific Method

The scientific method is a detailed, empirical problem-solving process used by biologists and other scientists. This iterative approach involves formulating a question based on observation, developing a testable potential explanation for the observation (called a hypothesis), making and testing predictions based on the hypothesis, and using the findings to create new hypotheses and predictions.
Generally, predictions are tested using carefully-designed experiments. Based on the outcome of these...

In Vitro Drug Dissolution: Alternative Methods

Alternative drug dissolution methods include the rotating bottle, intrinsic dissolution test, peristalsis, and the Franz diffusion cell method. The rotating bottle method involves meticulously rotating tightly capped controlled-release beads in a temperature-controlled bath. Periodic decanting of samples allows for residue assay, followed by refilling with fresh medium and testing at various pH levels to emulate the gastrointestinal tract conditions. In contrast, the intrinsic dissolution test...

Summary

A novel Modified Portable Bhasma Nirman Yantra (MPBNY) was developed for controlled calcination (Marana) of bhasma. Kasisa Bhasma prepared using MPBNY showed comparable physico-chemical properties to traditionally prepared bhasma.

Area of Science:

  • Ayurvedic pharmaceutics
  • Material science
  • Herbal medicine processing

Background:

  • Traditional bhasma preparation involves complex steps like Shodhana and Marana.
  • Conventional Marana uses cow dung cakes and wood, leading to pollution and inconsistent heating.
  • A need exists for controlled, efficient, and eco-friendly methods for bhasma production.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a Modified Portable Bhasma Nirman Yantra (MPBNY) for controlled calcination.
  • To compare the physico-chemical properties of Kasisa Bhasma prepared traditionally versus with MPBNY.

Main Methods:

  • Preparation of Kasisa Bhasma using traditional methods and the novel MPBNY.
  • Analysis using modern techniques: Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD).
  • Evaluation through Ayurvedic parameters: Rekhapurnatva, Varitaratva, Niramlatva, Apunarbhava, and Niruttha.

Main Results:

  • The MPBNY facilitates controlled heat supply for the calcination (puta) procedure.
  • Kasisa Bhasma prepared by both methods exhibited similar organoleptic properties.
  • Physico-chemical analysis revealed comparable results between traditionally prepared Kasisa Bhasma and that produced using MPBNY.

Conclusions:

  • The MPBNY is an effective, portable, and controllable alternative for bhasma calcination.
  • This innovation offers a potentially eco-friendlier and more consistent method for preparing herbo-mineral complex molecules.
  • The study validates the comparable quality of bhasma produced with the MPBNY, meeting both modern and traditional analytical standards.
