Summary

A 4 cm straw lodged in the epiglottic vallecula mimicked acute epiglottitis in a young man. This rare foreign body presentation highlights the importance of thorough examination for unusual causes of throat pain and fever.

  • Acute epiglottitis is a medical emergency characterized by throat pain and fever.
  • Foreign bodies in the upper aerodigestive tract can present with diverse symptoms.

Observation:

  • A 22-year-old man presented with symptoms mimicking acute epiglottitis.
  • Initial laryngoscopy revealed a swollen epiglottis, but no foreign body was immediately visible.

Findings:

  • A 4 cm straw was identified in the epiglottic vallecula after adrenaline inhalation.
  • The straw was the cause of the epiglottitis-like symptoms.

Implications:

  • This case represents a novel presentation of acute epiglottitis mimicked by a straw foreign body.
