Long-term ingestion of silver preparations for duodenal ulcers can lead to generalized argyria. This condition involves silver deposits in various tissues but has no pathological implications.

Area of Science:

  • Toxicology
  • Dermatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • A 52-year-old patient with a history of duodenal ulcer was treated with a silver-containing preparation for many years.
  • The total ingested silver amounted to approximately 35 g over the course of treatment.

Observation:

  • Argyria was diagnosed 18 years after the initial duodenal ulcer manifestation.
  • Autopsy revealed granulated silver deposits in the corium, particularly on elastic fibers, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, and hair follicles.
  • Silver deposits were also observed in blood vessel walls, renal glomeruli, choroid plexus, seminiferous tubules, and portal fields.

Findings:

  • Silver deposits were absent in the epidermis.
  • Intracellular deposits were primarily found in macrophages.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Rare instances of silver in epithelial basal membranes were noted.
  • Implications:

    • Generalized argyria, resulting from chronic silver exposure, is considered intractable.
    • Despite widespread silver deposition, the condition does not present pathological implications.
