Summary

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) may reduce macular edema in retinal capillary hemangioma (RCH). However, visual acuity improvement is not guaranteed, particularly for juxtapapillary RCH.

Background:

  • Retinal capillary hemangioma (RCH) is a rare vascular tumor.
  • Juxtapapillary and peripheral RCH present unique treatment challenges.

Observation:

  • This interventional case series evaluated photodynamic therapy (PDT) for RCH.
  • Four eyes with juxtapapillary RCH and one with peripheral RCH were treated.
  • Treatment protocols varied in fluence and duration.

Findings:

  • PDT led to tumor regression and partial macular edema resolution in some juxtapapillary RCH cases.
  • One peripheral RCH case showed tumor regression, edema resolution, and improved visual acuity.
  • Visual acuity remained stable in most patients, with one decline.
