Appendicitis01:19

Appendicitis

Appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the vermiform appendix, most commonly caused by obstruction of its lumen. The appendix is a narrow, blind-ended pouch that extends from the cecum, making it particularly prone to obstruction. Causes include fecaliths, lymphoid hyperplasia (often after viral infections), parasites, tumors, or foreign bodies. This obstruction initiates a cascade of pathological changes.Luminal Obstruction and Early InflammationAfter obstruction, normal mucosal...
Assessment of the Rectum and Anus01:25

Assessment of the Rectum and Anus

Evaluating the rectum and anus plays a crucial role in conducting a thorough physical examination of the gastrointestinal system. Although it may be uncomfortable and often embarrassing for the patient, it holds immense diagnostic value, particularly in detecting gastrointestinal diseases and abnormalities. This guide will explain how to perform this assessment using inspection and palpation methods.

Cholecystitis01:20

Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, most commonly caused by obstruction of the cystic duct. This blockage prevents bile from draining, leading to gallbladder distension, inflammation, and potentially serious complications. This condition may present acutely or chronically and can happen with or without gallstones.EtiologyAbout 95% of cholecystitis cases are calculous, caused by gallstones blocking the cystic duct, leading to bile accumulation and inflammation of the gallbladder...
Appendicitis-I: Introduction01:22

Appendicitis-I: Introduction

The appendix, a small, narrow, blind tube extending from the inferior part of the cecum, is widely regarded as a vestigial organ, having lost much of its original function through evolution. Despite its diminished role, the appendix can become inflamed, a condition known as appendicitis.
Etiology: Appendicitis can arise from various causes, primarily rooted in the obstruction of the appendix lumen. Factors contributing to this obstruction include fecal accumulation, lymphoid hyperplasia and, in...
Overview of Lipid Metabolism01:24

Overview of Lipid Metabolism

Lipid metabolism is a crucial process in the human body that involves the synthesis and degradation of lipids. This process is essential for energy production, cell membrane formation, and hormone production, among other functions.
Lipolysis: The Breakdown of Lipids:
Lipolysis is the process of breaking down lipids, particularly triglycerides, into glycerol and fatty acids. This process typically occurs in the adipose tissue and is triggered by various hormones, including glucagon and...
Cholesterol: Significance and Regulation01:29

Cholesterol: Significance and Regulation

Although not a source of energy, cholesterol plays a significant role as a foundational structure for bile salts, steroid hormones, and vitamin D, as well as being a crucial component of plasma membranes. Approximately 15% of blood cholesterol is derived from our diet, with the remainder synthesized from acetyl CoA by the liver and intestines. Cholesterol is eliminated from the body through its conversion into bile salts, which are eventually discarded in the feces.
Considering cholesterol and...

Summary

A rare case of mesenteric lipodystrophy, a disorder of sclerosing mesenteritis, was found in a young woman with facial lipodystrophy. This is the first reported instance linking these two conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Abdominal Surgery
  • Rare Diseases

Background:

  • A 21-year-old female with a history of facial lipodystrophy presented with abdominal pain, weight gain, and altered bowel habits.
  • Investigations revealed a large intraabdominal mass.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a rare case of mesenteric lipodystrophy.
  • To discuss the management of this condition.
  • To review the existing literature on mesenteric lipodystrophy.

Main Methods:

  • Surgical excision of the intraabdominal mass.
  • Histopathological examination of the excised mass.
  • Literature review.

Main Results:

  • A large (21cm×18cm×8cm) intraabdominal mass originating from the transverse mesocolon was completely excised.
  • Histology confirmed the mass to be mesenteric lipodystrophy.
  • This represents the first reported case of mesenteric lipodystrophy in a patient with pre-existing facial lipodystrophy.

Conclusions:

  • Mesenteric lipodystrophy is a rare entity within the spectrum of sclerosing mesenteritis.
  • This case highlights a potential association between facial lipodystrophy and mesenteric lipodystrophy.
  • The management involved complete surgical excision.
