  • To outline the clinical approach and management strategies for ingested foreign bodies in adults.

Main Methods:

  • A selective literature review was conducted using the PubMed database.
  • Pertinent studies on foreign-body ingestion in adults were identified and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Fish and chicken bones are the most common ingested foreign bodies in adults.
  • Approximately 80% of ingested foreign bodies pass spontaneously; endoscopy is required in 20%, and surgery in less than 1%.
  • Emergency esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is indicated for complete esophageal obstruction, sharp objects, or ingested batteries due to risks of aspiration, perforation, or necrosis.

Conclusions:

  • Conservative management with observation is often sufficient for ingested foreign bodies.
  • A low threshold for endoscopic retrieval is advised, with surgery reserved for complicated cases.
