Background:

  • Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterized by visual field loss.
  • Stereoacuity, the ability to perceive depth, is crucial for daily functioning and may be affected by glaucoma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between stereoacuity and the severity of glaucoma.

Main Methods:

  • Stereoacuity was assessed using the Titmus stereo test in 97 glaucoma patients.
  • Glaucoma severity was evaluated using the Hodapp-Anderson-Parrish (HAP) classification and Visual Field Index (VFI).
  • The presence of fixation threat was also considered.

Main Results:

  • A significant association was found between decreased stereoacuity and greater glaucomatous visual field loss (p < 0.001).
  • Stereoacuity worsened with increasing severity according to both HAP and VFI classifications.
  • Subjects with a threat to fixation exhibited significantly poorer stereoacuity.

Conclusions:

  • Decreased stereoacuity correlates with advanced glaucoma and visual field loss.
  • While early visual field defects may not impact stereoacuity, moderate to severe stages show a pronounced decline.
  • Fixation threat is a key indicator of significantly reduced stereoacuity in glaucoma patients.
