Summary

This study investigated sleepwalking (somnambulism) in adults, finding episodes occur during non-REM sleep. Clonazepam effectively suppressed sleepwalking in most patients treated.

Background:

  • Sleepwalking (somnambulism) is a parasomnia often presenting with complex behaviors.
  • Adult sleepwalking can be associated with violent actions or self-injury, necessitating clinical evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize sleepwalking episodes in adults using clinical interviews and polysomnography.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of various pharmacological treatments for adult sleepwalking.

Main Methods:

  • 10 adult patients with sleepwalking complaints underwent clinical interviews and polysomnography.
  • Polysomnographic data analyzed for episode occurrence, timing, and sleep stage.
  • Pharmacological interventions including clonazepam, carbamazepine, and flurazepam were assessed.

Main Results:

  • 47 distinct sleepwalking episodes were recorded in 8 patients during polysomnography.
  • Episodes predominantly occurred in non-REM sleep (91% in slow-wave sleep) and were not limited to early night.
  • Clonazepam demonstrated high efficacy, suppressing somnambulism in 5 of 6 patients.

Conclusions:

  • Adult sleepwalking is a complex disorder occurring mainly in slow-wave, non-REM sleep.
  • Pharmacological treatment, particularly with clonazepam, can be effective in managing adult sleepwalking.
