Waterpipe smoking and dependence are associated with chronic bronchitis: a case-control study in Lebanon

Waterpipe smoking, especially mixed with cigarettes, significantly increases chronic bronchitis risk in Lebanon. Current waterpipe dependence also emerged as a key risk factor for this respiratory condition.

- Current exclusive waterpipe smoking showed no significant association (OR=1.87).
- Current waterpipe dependence (OR=3.74) and ever waterpipe smoking > 20 WP-years were significantly associated with chronic bronchitis after adjustment (P<0.001).
Conclusions:
- Waterpipe smoking, particularly when combined with cigarette smoking, is a significant risk factor for chronic bronchitis in Lebanon.
- Nicotine dependence from waterpipe use is also associated with an increased risk of developing chronic bronchitis.
