Improving maternal health in Uganda requires addressing Antenatal Care (ANC) quality. Key issues include staffing shortages and inadequate supplies, alongside poor counseling on risk factors and birth preparedness.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Maternal Health
- Healthcare Quality
Background:
- Developing countries, particularly Uganda, face high maternal mortality rates, with over 90% of global deaths occurring here.
- Major causes include abortion, obstetric complications (hemorrhage, dystocia, eclampsia, sepsis).
- Quality Antenatal Care (ANC) is crucial for detecting and managing high-risk maternal conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the quality of Antenatal Care (ANC) services in Eastern Uganda.
- To identify specific areas for intervention to improve maternal health outcomes.
Main Methods:
- Data collected from 15 health facilities in Eastern Uganda.
- Observation checklists assessed structural components and ANC consultation completeness for 291 women.
- Patient satisfaction was evaluated through structured exit-interviews.
Main Results:
- Significant staffing gaps (over 40%) and inadequate infection control, drugs, and supplies were identified.
- Physical infrastructure and diagnostic equipment for ANC were generally adequate.
- Counseling on risk factors and birth preparedness was poor; essential tests were often missed.
Conclusions:
- Interventions must prioritize improving staffing, infection control, and drug/supply availability.
- Enhanced counseling for risk factor recognition and birth preparedness is essential.
- Addressing these gaps can significantly improve the quality of ANC services and maternal health.
