Area of Science:

  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Phytochemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Background:

  • Chloranthus multistachys is a plant species known for its diverse chemical constituents.
  • Sesquiterpenoids are a class of natural products with a wide range of biological activities.
  • Investigating the chemical diversity of medicinal plants can lead to the discovery of novel compounds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize novel sesquiterpenoids from the whole plant of Chloranthus multistachys.
  • To determine the structures and absolute stereochemistries of the isolated compounds.
  • To evaluate the isolated compounds for potential cytotoxicity and antifungal activities.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
  • Structure elucidation through extensive Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
  • Confirmation of absolute stereochemistry via single-crystal X-ray crystallography and Circular Dichroism (CD) spectra.

Main Results:

  • Nine new sesquiterpenoids were isolated: one 8,9-seco-lindenane disesquiterpenoid (chloramultiol G), four eudesmane sesquiterpenoids, and four guaiane sesquiterpenoids.
  • The structures of these compounds were fully elucidated using spectroscopic data.
  • Absolute stereochemistries for eight of the new compounds were confirmed by X-ray crystallography and CD spectra.

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified and characterized a series of novel sesquiterpenoids from Chloranthus multistachys.
  • None of the nine tested compounds exhibited significant cytotoxicity against human tumor cell lines or antifungal activity in vitro.
  • Further research may explore other biological activities or structural modifications of these sesquiterpenoids.
