Serum Studies: Renal Function Tests

Renal function tests are crucial for assessing kidney health, monitoring disease progression, and evaluating the kidneys' efficiency in waste elimination, fluid balance, and electrolyte regulation. Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum chemerin levels throughout gestation.
  • To compare chemerin levels with established indicators of insulin resistance in pregnant women.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study analyzed serum chemerin in 20 pregnant women across three trimesters and 20 non-pregnant controls.
  • Chemerin levels were also assessed during different phases of the menstrual cycle in 16 eumenorrheic women.
  • Statistical analyses correlated chemerin with adiponectin, lipids, insulin, and HOMA.

Main Results:

  • Serum chemerin levels were significantly elevated in late gestation compared to early and middle gestation (P<0.001, P=0.001).
  • Chemerin levels did not fluctuate significantly during the menstrual cycle.
  • A negative correlation was observed between serum chemerin and adiponectin levels, strengthening when controls were included (r=-0.2471).
  • No significant association was found between chemerin and triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, insulin, or HOMA.

Conclusions:

  • Serum chemerin levels increase significantly during late gestation and are negatively associated with adiponectin.
  • Chemerin's lack of correlation with other insulin sensitivity markers suggests its role in gestational insulin resistance requires further investigation.
